I really only wanted Sheldon’s line, “It occurs to me that all of your problems could be solved by obtaining more money.” But I also didn’t want to look that hard.
The whole point of this post is that I want a Shopsmith. I think they are cool.
Sadly new ones, cost more than my truck, so used it is. For those of you who don’t know a Shopsmith is a Lathe, Drill Press, Table Saw, and other “stationary” tools all engineered into one piece of equipment. You can also purchase add-on tools to increase what the tool can do. It takes up little space in the shop, is American made, and is a pretty good tool.
I browse Craigslist a lot and found a Shopsmith Mark V for $1000. I don’t have a thousand dollars to spend on a tool. And I have a strict policy on never going into debt to purchase tools. Considering I want a lathe and a new drill press which would cost me about $2000 this is a pretty good deal. I doubt I’d ever use the table saw since I really like the one I have. But the functionality would be nice.
Oh well. I’ll just keep saving my money. My goal is to one day have a “slush fund” of about $2000 just to spend on tools or replace tools when they break. But I’m not there yet.
