Projects and Goals for 2015

Yes I know you’re supposed to do this post at the first of the year, blah, blah, but I’m doing it now.  The main reason is so that I have an idea of where I’m going for the year.

Screenshot 2015-02-20 14.02.10The Modular Shop is coming along.  I’m still building the cabinets and playing with different layouts using Sketchup.  I’m honestly getting tired of doing the same task every time I go to the shop (which is about 2-3 hours a week).  Like many things this is an issue of delayed gratification.  Once this shop is redone it will function much better, be more organized, and make working on new projects much more enjoyable.

My next major project will be a small table for my mom.  She brought me an antique endtable that has been in the family for, I think, over 100 years.  Currently all the joints are loose, the top is split and is a horrible shade of 70’s yellow.  It’s going to be a lot of work but I want to try to get it to bare wood.  I think it is Cherry.  If that proves to be impossible, my mom has picked out a nice gloss red that will look nice when done.  I plan on shooting video for my YouTube channel of the restoration process.

Is this not a beautiful color?

After this I can go a few other directions:

I have a headboard bench in the works, but I became bored with it about halfway through.  I need to get it finished since it’s taking up space and I plan on selling it.

My wife wants some boxes for her antique sewing machines.  Antique sewing machines were made to sit in cabinet/desks and have moving parts underneath.  The Boxes will allow her to use them on the Sewing Desk I built her a few years ago.

To add too my wife’s obsession with all things old and sewing we have a couple of old sewing cabinets in the storeroom that need to be repaired.  She plans on keeping one and letting me sell the other.  They both have dovetailed drawers and some are broken.  One is missing a drawer entirely but has the drawer face which is nice.

I need to finish my rifle stock, but like the headboard bench I became bored with it.  Part of it is I don’t have a good place to work on it.  Finishing the shop should help with this.  I really want to get it completed because it is going to look amazing.

Another project is to build out the new tool box I bought for my truck.  I want to do an adaptation of the Modular Shop and have it equipped for small jobs.  I’m thinking hard about the tools I want to live in the tool box, and how best to organize them.  Right now I just have the basics thrown in there; jumper cables, flashlight, tiedown straps, extra socket set.  But I want it to be a true tool box that I can do basic carpentry work out of on the fly.  I may invest in a second Craftsman C3 cordless system to leave in the truck.  Right now I have an extra charger and drill that I can leave in there.  Also a quality inverter to power the charger would be nice.

A Crazy/Fun project Idea I have is to restore the ping pong table at church.  The top is torn up, and the base is dirty and dingy.  I want to paint the metal base and redo the top with edge-jointed pine that has been stained.  I think it would look awesome.

As always there are a few projects that I need to do and want to do around the house, but this is all I can think of right now.

I’d love to hear of the projects on your to-do list for the year.  Also include your blog address! I really enjoy reading about other woodworkers projects and methods.  Also don’t be afraid to sign up to this blog by email.  I hate spam and you’ll only get an email when I post (which is about once a week).

Thanks for Reading,
Robert
